Do I need to purchase new materials?

If you have recently taken the bar exam, you may use the materials you already have. I do not provide materials and do not endorse one particular set of books, although I have some opinions as to a few books that have been useful to other students. If you are from out of state or have not recently taken the bar exam, you may want to look for used books on Ebay or at your local law school (if you in California).

What do your services cost?

My fees are based upon a sliding scale hourly rate. We will discuss the specifics of my fees at the time of our initial phone conversation. I do not require financial statements or income disclosure from you. There are individuals who may have a low income but very few expenses while other may have high incomes but significant expenses or financial responsibilities.

What I ask from you is this: Look at your expenses vs. income. If you are able to eat out at restaurants, take vacations, or buy expensive clothing you would fall at the top end of my scale. If you are barely getting by, you should pay at the at the bottom of my schedule. If you fall in-between please pay in the middle. All I ask is that that you be honest in your assessment of where you fall using my guidelines.

Do I have to use PayPal?

No, I offer PayPal as a easy way of payment. It allows me to take credit card payments (I pay the service charge for your use of the service) and it allows you the option of financing my services if you need to do so. PayPal no longer requires you to open an account to use the payment site. Although I am willing to accept payment by check, your check must be received at my office prior to our scheduled appointment.

I am in another part of the state. Can I still work with you?

Yes. I work with many people who I never meet face to face. As long as you have a reliable phone connection and can get your writing to me, we can work together. Please see Instructions for Essay/Performance Critique.

Do you work with first-time takers?

I will work with first time takers who are also taking a traditional review course and would like individual feedback. I do not generally work with individuals who have not used a traditional review course at least once because of the necessity of a complete substantive review. I offer assistance with writing style and test taking techniques but I do not offer in-depth substantive review.

Should I get my exam books from the State Bar?

Absolutely! Frequently, people have habits under pressure which do not show up at other times. I find it very helpful to see your writing, under exam conditions, and over the three day period in order to evaluate how you come across to the grader. Keep in mind: 65% of your score is based on subjective feedback. Your memory of what you wrote and how you handled a particular question may not be as clear as you might think by the time you get your results. This way we can both see what you did and work from there.
